Austro-Hungarian consulate reports are excellent sources for the history of the late Ottoman Balkans. The present edition contains reports on Kosovo Vilayet with its administrative headquarters in Skopje, a former province comprising the state territory of today's Kosovo, the northern regions of today's Republic of North Macedonia and the Sanjak of Novi Pazar (today's Montenegro and Serbia). The volume edited by Oliver Jens Schmitt and Eva Anne Frantz represents the most comprehensive edition of such sources in recent years, shedding light on politics, society, economy, religion, and education. The edition is therefore serving as a point of departure for further research on the Ottoman Empire but also offering a stimulating read in its own right, since the reports often contain the most vivid depictions. The texts also provide excellent material for academic teaching.
