William Elliot Griffis's Welsh Fairy Tales gathers legendary materials from Wales-stories of fairies, enchanted hills, heroic youths, uncanny bargains, magical transformations, and the moral surprises that animate Celtic folk tradition. Written in clear, ceremonious prose suited to younger readers yet attentive to antiquarian resonance, the collection preserves the cadence of oral tale-telling while translating it into the polished idiom of early twentieth-century folklore books. It belongs to the broader Celtic revival and comparative fairy-tale movement, where regional myth was reshaped for literary education. Griffis, an American clergyman, educator, and prolific interpreter of world cultures, is best remembered for works on Japan and the Netherlands, but his career consistently joined scholarship with popular instruction. His interest in national character, folklore, and the ethical imagination made Welsh materials especially congenial: they offered a small nation's memory in compact, vivid narratives. As an outsider, he approached them less as a philologist than as a mediator, adapting inherited wonder for Anglophone families. This volume is recommended to readers seeking an approachable entrance into Welsh folklore and to scholars interested in how traditional tales were domesticated for modern childhood. Its charm lies not in archival purity but in lucid retelling, cultural sympathy, and the enduring spell of Celtic wonder.
